Important question for frustrated and confused bassists who, despite the amount of time and effort they put into practising, still haven’t made improvements…
What’s the difference between bassists who quickly and consistently improve their bass guitar skills… and the frustrated ones who barely gain anything but self-defeating thoughts and callused fingers?
If you guessed "expensive 1-2-1 coaching", you'd be wrong.
If you guessed "hours and hours of practice doing the same thing over and over again – every single day," then you'd be wrong.
And if you guessed…
… bass is just “for them”,
… good bass guitar with amazing gear & equipment
… having the privilege of studying in an expensive music school,
… immense knowledge of music theory,
… or big hands. (A huge myth, btw)
YOU WOULD BE oh-so-terribly WRONG…
Because here's the deal.
You've Reached Some Crises
You have more information and methods at your disposal than ever…
… YouTube Videos
… IGTV
… Bass guitar apps
… Online training programs
… That one go-to friend that might also not have a clue on what he's talking about
… Blogs
… and the good old: Udemy…
The list goes on…
And these are unbelievable privileges to have…
Yet, YOU – and many bass players like you – are stuck in…
These result in stagnating your improvements…
But this doesn’t mean that you are “bad” or you just can't learn the bass…
… it's also not because these materials are "bad"…
It’s also not your fault that you feel lazy and unmotivated...
Because how can you be motivated when your practice method just kills your sanity?
… And it's also not your fault that you can’t snatch at least 30 minutes a day to practice.
It's the 21st century, we have more responsibility than ever, so I TOTALLY understand…
It’s just that…
YOU'RE NOT GETTING THE QUICK BUT STILL EFFECTIVE & COMPLETE EDUCATION THAT YOU NEED…
Chances are, you fall into one of these 3 types of frustrated bass players:
The Confused Information Suckers (aka. Self-Taught Bassist)
You like to binge-watch tutorials from YouTube, IGTV, or FB …
Or maybe you’re one of the fortunate who can spend hundreds if not thousands of bucks on a program you found online…
You feel so pumped thinking that, “Finally! I’m gonna be able to do it now!”
But…
After watching that social media video or that one episode in a course module you bought…
You. Were. Clueless.
And confused…
“How the F do I do that?”, you said.
You don’t know how to do it...
You have no idea how to practice...
The teacher in the video didn’t explain the topic well enough…
(Y’know, those kinds of teachers that are really good at what they do but cannot teach it.)
The exercise that was given is either too easy that it won’t do anything to make you improve…
… or too hard that you can’t do any of it.
You were given all these things that you “need to learn and do”…
And now you’re more confused than before and you don’t know what to do first.
But because you’re still hopeful…
“Maybe one more video or one more course will do it,” you say.
You’re stuck in this information overload and practice paralysis, trying to figure it out all on your own…
Yes, you’ve got some help, but are they really helpful?
You keep searching for that one video that will transform the way you play and make you an overnight pro….
But here you are…
Eventually, you get tired…
You were hit by these unstoppable self-deprecating thoughts…
… you start believing that “bass is not for me”.
… you start losing the desire and motivation to keep improving…
And there your bass, gear & equipment – sitting in the corner of your room or studio – collecting dust, saddened for how these online tutorials have let you down.
*sad low notes start playing*
The “I Don’t Have a Time” Bassist
Oh, this one is more common than anyone would think.
Maybe you’re one of those people who say “I just don’t have the time to practice”
And if you are, it’s not your fault – It’s quite valid to say that because of our busy schedule…
We all have responsibilities that we have to take care of…
… Work
… Studies
… Family
… Pets
… and many more…
But maybe you’re still hopeful.
You try to snatch 5-10 minutes of practice here and there…
Hoping that you make a scratch of improvement in your skills...
… but the only thing you scratched was your bass guitar because you were mad rushing… (oh, that hurts!)
Another problem that might arise associated with having no time, is having no structure or routine to follow…
This just makes everything needlessly more time-consuming…
And again…
… you enter this loop of negative thinking that maybe “I should just stop”…
And you actually do.
You give up your passion...
And there your bass, gear & equipment – sitting in the corner of your room or studio – collecting dust, saddened for how all these responsibilities of the 21st century have let your passion down.
*sad low notes start playing*
The No Motivation Bassist
Ugh.
Maybe you’re the type of bassist that has the time, has the resources, but doesn’t have the motivation to practice or be consistent with it…
Maybe the course you bought or the free online video you watched is just too hard to understand or to follow…
Maybe you do the same thing over and over again every single day, and now you’re done with it…
Maybe you don’t have a supportive community that shares the same goal as you…
Or maybe you just tell yourself that you are lazy...
Well, don’t blame yourself…
Even if you think you’re just lazy, I believe there’s something deeper that’s causing you to procrastinate practising.
You might be…
I’m not really sure, but what I’m sure about is…
IT IS NOT REALLY YOUR FAULT.
It doesn’t matter if you think you’re just really lazy, because there’s always something that you can do about it...
But because you still like blaming yourself…
You’ll blast your mind with self-deprecating thoughts that are just making your desire burn out…
And in no time, you’ll find your bass, gear & equipment – sitting in the corner of your room or studio, collecting dust, saddened for how these circumstances have let you down.
*sad low notes start playing*
Who am I And Why You Should Listen
Hey there! I’m Hugh Richardson. And when I’m not serenading my wife and adorable kids by playing the bass... I play gigs, teach bass in a music school, run my business, and make videos for my YouTube channel and Instagram…
I always hear from students I teach in music schools and YouTube comments about my clear way of teaching. I mean something that has no BS, useless talking. I mean a tutorial that anyone – even a complete beginner – would understand...
At least that’s what they say… I don’t wanna brag about it.
But why am I telling you this? And what’s in it for you?
Let me explain:
You’re reading this because you probably clicked a link from an email I sent you.
That tells me that you have something you wanna achieve in your bass guitar skills…
I’m not sure what it exactly is… could be because you wanna:
If at least one of those is your case, then you’re in the right place...
With my decades of experience (see below), from starting to play the bass when I was 8 to now having done things that very few musicians would ever achieve (I mean being able to build a full-time career as a musician)...
… I’ve gathered a lot of knowledge to create a system that surely gets any bass player of any level to make consistent progress…
And you’re about to witness it now…
But first...
Here’s what the Internet has to say about me and my way of teaching.
If there’s one thing that I care about as a bass teacher and bass player myself, it’s the clarity of teaching.
As you probably experience from watching gazillions of YouTube videos, taking online courses, in-person coaching, and more (you name it)…
… most of the “bass teachers” are not really good at teaching.
They might be a master of their stuff, but that won’t automatically mean that they can teach their stuff.
I’m pretty sure you know somebody who’s very good at something but when you ask how they do it they cannot tell you...
That’s why I take pride in my way of teaching (which a lot of people label as “clear”, “to the point”, and “No BS”)...
Actually, here’s what YouTube has to say about me and my way of teaching…
Those are just some of the wonderful comments I got from my subscribers…
I haven’t even included the thoughts of my in-person students...
I could go on and on and on…
But my point here is that I’m confident that with my teaching methodologies, no matter what level your skill is at right now, you’re going to improve with my Bass Players Study Group program…
Want to become the type of bassist that makes consistent progress without spending too much time and lots of money? First...
7 Things You Gotta Understand Right Now If You Want To Survive These Crises And Start Making Consistent Progress
1) You don’t need to spend thousands of bucks to get quality 1-2-1 coaching
Not all of us can afford to pull out a hundred dollars for 2 sessions of 1-2-1 coaching, obviously…
It’s almost reserved to the privilege.
But please, don’t envy that because there are ways to get the benefit of 1-2-1 coaching at a way more affordable price – without sacrificing quality.
2) It isn’t necessarily that you’re bad with bass, you’re just not practising it the right way.
Okay. So it doesn’t matter how good your learning materials are, it doesn’t matter how expensive they are, it doesn’t matter who made them or to whom they came from…
If your practice routine sucks, or if you’re not practising the bass properly, then don’t expect to get your skill at the next level.
Learning is another skill that you wanna hone first, so you can learn virtually anything that you want. THAT INCLUDES THE BASS.
There’s more to learning than reading, watching, repetition, doing exercises here and there…
If you wanna learn the secrets to effective learning, keep reading as I reveal it...
3)You don’t need to spend hours every day doing the same sh*t over and over again to see improvements.
Just because you’re spending hours every day playing complex but the same bass line or tab you’ve been playing 1 month ago, doesn’t mean you’re gonna see improvements.
You can repeat things over and over again thinking you’ll master them, but it won’t guarantee you any result across your whole repertoire of bass guitar skills.
What you need is to do quick and effective exercises that are gonna help you improve many aspects of your bass guitar skills.
4) Free YouTube Videos and IGTV posts alone won’t do it.
Free lessons from the magical Internet are abso-freaking-lutely great.
You get so many videos telling you how to do this one thing, and you see another video telling you how to do that one thing in another way…
But more often than not, it just makes so many players confused…
… they keep stuffing their minds with information that they actually don’t need when they start playing…
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re one of them.
But there's no shame here…
As I said, these free lessons are great, but it’s not enough to make you improve as a bass player.
What you need is a structure that you can follow – that is going to carve the path to the goal you’re trying to achieve…
Free stuff on the Internet barely does that.
5) To make genuine improvements, you must focus on mastering different core skills.
While it (kind of) makes sense when Bruce Lee said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
… mastering just one skill is just as counterproductive as being mediocre in every sub-skill.
Here’s what I mean:
Playing the bass guitar is not just about plucking strings, making low note sounds, supporting the band, etc. Playing bass – just as playing other instruments – requires different sub-skills in order to play it smoothly and pleasantly…
The problem is how do you know which sub-skill to practice first, or do you even know what bass guitar sub-skills are?
6) Any bass guitar skills can be learned when you put enough time and effort into practising them.
Let’s kill the fixed mindset here…
The reason why you’re not improving has nothing to do with natural selection and losing the genetic lottery and having small hands…
It also has nothing to do with God-given talent …
The best bass players we know out there, like John Paul Jones, Flea, and Victor Wooten (who has small hands) have invested time and effort into learning their craft and overcoming their weaknesses…
If they were able to do it, what’s stopping you?
Anything can be learned...
But you need to have the right set of training and guidance to do that.
7) The reason why you don’t feel motivated is that you’re not surrounded by like-minded people who share the same goal as you – and your practice routine is probably too easy or not challenging enough.
Okay, so here’s the guilting part.
It’s not really that you’re lazy.
We ALL have our downtime sometimes…
Sometimes we feel like we’re gonna conquer the whole world…
Sometimes we feel like a potato waiting to be mashed by our self-deprecating thoughts.
The probable reason why you’re not motivated to practice might be because:
And with that, here’s the most game-changing question you will ever ask as a bass player…
If there was a structured, complete, easy-to-follow way to quickly and consistently improve your bass guitar skills – and at the same time have your unique concerns addressed immediately – without spending tons of money…
Would you finally feel motivated and empowered enough to grab that bass and start making improvements?
I’ve been scratching my head for the last year working in the trenches trying to come up with a solution that will solve a lot of problems bass players like you have…
The Result Is…
What is it?

The Heart of Bass Players Study Group:
How to Learn Virtually Any Skill That You Want on Your Own
The start of my journey as a bass player is typical…
I began playing bass at the age of 8. I wasn’t a child prodigy or anything like that. I just like to play the bass for some reason.
Fast forward, I joined my first school band at the age of 11 and started doing gigs around school and my hometown.
Things came naturally to me in the beginning…
I could play most of the songs my band wanted to play without much practice and I could get through my lessons without having to study rigorously…
BUT THAT LUCK DIDN’T LAST LONG.
When I was 14, my teacher handed me a book that stunned me and changed my path forever.
The book was “J.S. Bach for Bass Guitar”. It had ten pieces of Bach’s music that had been arranged for the bass guitar.
How did it change my path?
Well… I couldn’t play any of the pieces in the book. They were too difficult.
I thought I could rely on my natural ability to play the pieces, but it seemed to not be enough…
But I still did practice all of them...
And after a week of trying to learn and practice it, I still wasn’t able to play the piece...
I had no idea how to practice.
I spoke to my friends, teachers, and my family, who were also musicians, and got some useful generic advice about “play things more slowly” and “use a metronome”...
The thing is, they didn’t always help that much…
If I got better, it was through dumb luck. Not through deliberate practice, because I didn’t know about that.
I went round and round this cycle for years until…
… I got enrolled in a music school and went to my first technique class.
The first thing I was asked was, “How do you practice?”
Before, I didn’t know why the teacher even needed to ask this question…
“Well, I play through something a lot of times,” I answered.
The teacher responded, “Why?” As if he was telling me that I was doing a wrong thing (which I did)...
I gave some BS answers but the truth is I had no single idea why. It was the way I learned how to practice from the people that had taught me early in my career.
And after more classes, and more experience with the bass, I realized I was actually doing a very ineffective way of learning.
I had no idea that there was anything better…
… something that I didn’t know was actually better.
A better practice methodology.
And after decades of being a Full-Time Professional Bassist, I’ve just made my practice system even better.
And now, I have decided to put my learning system out for the people for one simple reason:
I know that many bass players like you are stuck in a practice crisis where you don’t know what you’re doing, or if what you’re doing will even give you the result that you want.
I wanna change that and give you a system that you can follow repeatedly to supercharge your learning and accelerate your improvement.
So, ladies and gentlemen... I introduce you…
